Feed is the largest cost in a layer flock and it is the one you can work out exactly. Eggs were in oversupply through mid-2026 with growers culling, so the honest use of this page is to find out whether the farmgate price covers what you are spending.

Computed at 115 g of feed per hen per day and a 50 kg sack. Flock size and costing period both cancel out of this figure, so every cell is a rate rather than a total and your own flock size does not change it. Hy-Line implies 0.125 kg of feed per egg and Lohmann 0.128 to 0.141; if your own lay rate and intake put you far outside that, weigh one of them again.

What this page will not tell you

There is no payback period on this page and no projected annual profit, and their absence is deliberate. This tool exists so a keeper can find out that the answer is no. What it gives you is what one egg costs you in feed, beside what an egg is currently fetching, and the lay rate at which those two meet.

Eggs were in oversupply through the middle of 2026 and growers were culling. That is the context this tool was built in, and it is why the page is arranged the way it is: cost per egg first, the farmgate price beside it, and the lay rate where the two meet. Sayang, but a keeper deciding whether to place 200 pullets needs the number that says no more than the one that says yes.

At 115 g a hen a day and the archived egg price above. The break-even lay rate is feed cost per hen per day divided by the egg price, and nothing else is in it: not flock size, not the costing period. The margin column is at an 80% lay rate. Neither column is a profit. Pullet depreciation, housing, medication, transport and breakages are all outside it.

Two breeders, two ways of saying it, one answer

Two breeders publish this differently and land in the same place. Hy-Line quotes 116.9 g of feed a day at a 93.6% lay rate, which is 0.125 kg of feed in every egg. Lohmann quotes a feed conversion of 2.0 to 2.2 kg per kg of egg mass, which against their own 63.9 g egg is 0.128 to 0.141 kg. Two independent measurements, agreeing to within about ten percent. If your own figures put you far outside 0.125 to 0.141 kg of feed per egg, one of the two numbers you entered is worth weighing again.

Both figures come off cage standards: Hy-Line Brown and Lohmann Brown-Classic, both measured in a controlled house at 20°C. That is not a Philippine open-sided layer house, and the gap runs the wrong way: heat cuts intake, and a hen that eats less lays less.

The comparison nobody puts next to a peso figure

A commercial brown lays roughly three times what a Philippine native hen does, and that ratio is the thing a keeper choosing between them actually needs. What the table does not carry, and what tilts it back: a native egg fetches more, a native hen costs far less to keep, and neither is in the arithmetic on this page.

What the grid assumes

  • 50 hens laying at 80% over 30 days, eating 115 g each a day. Both of those are YOUR figures. Nothing on this page substitutes a breeder standard for a number you did not measure, because a lay rate nobody counted produces a cost per egg that looks authoritative and is fiction.
  • Feed works out at PHP 36 a kilo, from the sack price you entered and a 50 kg sack. Nobody in the Philippines publishes a finished sack price, so that figure is yours and this site did not supply it.
  • At those numbers there is 0.144 kg of feed in every egg, costing PHP 5.17.

What it does not cover

  • This is FEED ONLY. It is the largest cost in a layer flock and it is not the only one: pullet depreciation, housing, medication, transport, breakages and the birds that stop laying are all outside this figure. A margin over feed is not a profit.
  • The benchmarks beside your answer are Hy-Line Brown and Lohmann Brown-Classic, both cage standards from a controlled house. They are there to tell you whether your own two numbers are plausible, not to stand in for them.
  • Egg size is not in the arithmetic. A tray of pullet eggs and a tray of jumbos cost different amounts of feed to produce and fetch different prices, and this tool costs an egg rather than a kilo of egg.
  • The Philippine egg size bands (jumbo over 70 g, extra-large 65 to 69, large 60 to 64, medium 55 to 59, small 45 to 54, peewee under 45) converged across two secondary sources citing PNS/BAFS, and the standard itself was not read. They are not treated as a cited figure anywhere on this site.
  • Native chicken is the comparison this page does not make for you, and the ratio is stark: DOST-PCAARRD's breed information system gives Darag 110 eggs per hen per year and Boholano 62, against Hy-Line's 330.5 to 350.6 by 72 weeks. Roughly three times the eggs from a commercial brown. Native eggs sell for more and the birds cost less to keep, and neither of those is in this arithmetic.

The Philippine reality gap

Both benchmark tables on this page are cage, controlled environment, measured in a house at 20 degrees. The one Philippine layer survey located, De Castro on 100 commercial farms in Batangas, found 87% of them running intensive OPEN-SIDED housing on Dekalb and Lohmann strains. An open-sided house in Philippine ambient is not the house those standards came out of, and the gap goes the wrong way: heat cuts intake, and a hen that eats less lays less. That is why the lay rate and the feed intake are both yours to supply rather than ours to assume. A roughly 6% average monthly mortality figure for Batangas layer farms surfaced in a secondary source that could not be opened, and it is deliberately not quoted here or anywhere on this site until somebody reads it.
