How much of its own chicken and eggs the country grows
PSA’s self-sufficiency ratio for chicken meat and for chicken eggs: the share of what the country used that the country produced, back to 1988.
What this figure is not
Not USDA’s figure. USDA’s balance sheet puts the domestic share of chicken meat materially lower for the same years, on a different weight basis, and the two are never blended here.
Why these are read together
One of these two lines moves and the other does not. Eggs have read exactly 100 every year since at least 2018 while chicken meat sits in the high 80s and low 90s, and the gap between a flat line and a moving one is the finding. On its own the egg series looks like a broken chart.
Axis starts at 80, not 0.
38 annual observations from PSA OpenSTAT: Agri-Fishery Indicators, Self-Sufficiency Ratio, 1988 to 2025. Chicken meat self-sufficiency starts at 100 percent in 1988 and ends at 91.9 percent in 2025. Highest 100 percent in 1988, lowest 84.7 percent in 2016. Chicken egg self-sufficiency starts at 99.7 percent in 1988 and ends at 100 percent in 2025. Highest 100 percent in 1990, lowest 99.7 percent in 1988. Every value is in the table below.
