Deworming Chickens: Schedule, Products, Evidence

The short answer
Not on a fixed calendar, and the one Philippine measurement is the reason. Eight small layer farms in Leyte were all deworming their flocks every three to six months, and 92.2% of 243 faecal samples still came back positive. Hindi nawawala ang bulate sa iskedyul, nawawala ito sa lupa at sa dumi. Treat what a faecal check or a sick bird tells you to treat, use what the pack in your hand is licensed for, and read its withdrawal period before an itlog or a bird leaves the bakuran.

The Philippine number nobody quotes is the one about the deworming
The prevalence figure from Leyte has been quoted before, including on this site. The sentence next to it has not, and it is the more useful half.
Ybañez et al. (2018) took 243 faecal samples from eight small-scale layer farms in Baybay, Hilongos and Albuera between April and June 2016. Parasites turned up in 92.2% of them. Then the methods section records what those farms were already doing: “All farms reportedly dewormed their flock every 3–6 months.”
Read that twice. Every farm in the sample was on the schedule that every backyard guide on the internet recommends, and nine samples in ten were still positive. Ang iskedyul ay ginagawa na nila, at hindi pa rin ito sapat.
The infection pattern says how thoroughly. 24.7% of samples carried a single parasite, 42.0% carried two to three, and 25.5% carried three or more, which sums to the same 92.2. Most positive birds were not carrying one thing.

The authors’ own conclusion is the careful one: they call for routine monitoring and “the implied need for regular deworming or dewormer rotation in the area”, and note that parasites “may acquire resistance to therapeutic drugs”. Rotation, not repetition. That is a different instruction from the one a keeper usually receives. At kung pareho pa rin ang bote na binibili mo kada tatlong buwan, hindi mo pa nasusubukan ang payo nila kahit isang beses.
Bakit ang kalendaryo ang unang dapat kuwestiyunin
The standard reference for poultry medicine does not recommend routine calendar deworming, and says why in one sentence.
The Merck Veterinary Manual’s helminthiasis chapter, reviewed by Rüdiger Hauck DVM PhD in January 2024 and updated in May 2025, opens its treatment section by noting that “the number of medications approved for treatment of helminthiasis in poultry is decreasing. There are also reports of resistance developing.” Then the instruction: “To decrease the potential spread of resistance, treatment should be limited to birds with severe infestation that show clinical signs of disease.”
Limited to. Not scheduled for. Kabaligtaran po iyon ng “every three months” na nababasa mo sa halos lahat ng backyard blog.
The resistance is not a theoretical worry either. Collins et al. (2025), in Poultry Science, dosed 13 Ascaridia galli isolates and 8 Heterakis gallinarum isolates with fenbendazole at the label rate. Twelve of the 13 A. galli isolates were cleared completely and one sat at 66%. Every one of the eight H. gallinarum isolates was resistant, at efficacies ranging from 19.35 to 66%.
That work was done on farms in South Carolina and Pennsylvania, and I will not pretend it is a Philippine finding. No anthelmintic resistance survey has been published for Philippine poultry, which means a keeper here cannot know whether the product that stopped working is the wrong product or a working product against a resistant worm. That is a real gap and it sits beside the ones in the register rather than in it, because the register tracks prices and this is a research absence. Kaya kapag may nagsabi sa iyo na tumigil na raw ang isang gamot dito sa atin, wala kang mapagtatanungang pag-aaral, kapitbahay lang.
What the Philippine state publishes, and what it stops short of
There is a Philippine document with anthelmintics in it, it is not the one you would guess, and what it contains is a ceiling rather than an instruction.
PNS/BAFS 48:2022, the DA-BAFS standard on veterinary drug residues in food, covers “the Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) of veterinary drugs established for livestock and poultry including their products such as egg and raw milk, honey, and fish and fishery products.” Eggs are inside the scope, explicitly. It runs to 64 drugs, of which 14 are headed anthelmintic agent.
Of those 14, exactly two name poultry anywhere in their species column: levamisole, at 10 µg/kg in muscle, 100 in liver, 10 in kidney and 10 in fat, and flubendazole, at 200 µg/kg in poultry muscle, 500 in liver and 400 in eggs. The other 12 do not name poultry. Only one of the 14 carries an egg row at all, so 13 of them do not.

Now the distinction that decides whether any of this helps you. An MRL is a ceiling on what may be found in the food. A withdrawal period is how long you wait to get under it. The Philippines publishes the ceiling and does not publish the wait. Iba ang “ito ang pinakamataas na puwede” sa “ganito karaming araw ang hintayin mo”, at ang pangalawa ang kailangan mo bago mo ibenta ang itlog.
Two fair qualifications, because the standard should not be blamed for more than it did. It is adopted from the Codex list CX/MRL 2-2018, so the poultry blanks are inherited from an international committee rather than chosen in Quezon City. And its banned-drug table, Table 67, holds beta-agonists, nitrofurans, carbadox and olaquindox, chloramphenicol, diethylstilbestrol, malachite green and chloroform. Walang anthelmintic doon. Nothing on this page is banned; it is simply unspecified.
The husbandry code is where a keeper would look next, and it stops in the same place. PNS/BAFS 184:2016 § 5.4.2 asks for “a written chicken health program in place, including a vaccination and deworming program, if required”, updated regularly and supervised by a licensed veterinarian. A should-level clause in a voluntary code with no schedule and no dose attached, which is the same shape the state’s vaccination record takes.
Ilang araw bago puwedeng kainin ang itlog at ang karne
This is the part that actually harms somebody, so here is every withdrawal figure I could open a document for, with the document.
The clearest label belongs to a product licensed in the United Kingdom rather than here. Elanco’s Flubenvet, a 1% flubendazole medicated premixture for gapeworm, large roundworm, caecal worm, hairworm and gizzard worm, is fed for 7 consecutive days, one 60 g tub medicating 20 kg of feed. Its meat withdrawal is stated plainly: “Treated birds may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 7 days from the last treatment.” For eggs it states “there is no withholding period for chickens producing eggs for human consumption when the product is used at the recommended inclusion rate.”
The MSD Veterinary Manual’s withholding-periods chapter, updated May 2025, gives the same drug a range across jurisdictions: treated birds “may be slaughtered for human consumption between 1 and 7 days from the last treatment”, and eggs “are safe for human consumption (no withholding time is required) if the treatment is supplied at the correct dosage.” Note the condition on the end of that sentence. It is doing all the work.
For fenbendazole, Penn State Extension, written by Megan Lighty DVM PhD DACPV and updated 15 June 2026, records that it is the only FDA-approved dewormer for roundworms and cecal worms in chickens and turkeys in the United States, and that “no withdrawal time is required for consumption of eggs or meat from treated birds when administered according to label directions.” The same page notes that piperazine, sold as Wazine, “is no longer available for use in the United States.”
None of those three is a Philippine authorisation, and I am not going to dress them up as one. What a keeper here can act on is narrower and still worth having: read the withdrawal period off the pack before the first dose, not after, and if the pack does not carry one, that silence is the finding. Huwag mong hulaan ito. A wrong guess ends up sa itlog na ibinenta mo sa kapitbahay.
Before you dose anything, and who to ask
- Dosage comes off the label or off a vet, never off a page like this one. Merck warns that treating a heavy roundworm burden can kill migrating larvae and trigger a shock-like syndrome ending in sudden death, and that fenbendazole should not be given during moult because it may interfere with feather regrowth. If your flock is in moult, that is a reason to wait.
- Your municipal or provincial agriculture office has the livestock inspector and, in most LGUs, the only veterinarian a bakuran keeper can reach without a fee. Ask them what is registered locally and what they see working.
- A faecal check is the cheap step nobody offers you. A veterinary clinic or diagnostic laboratory can examine droppings and say whether there is a burden worth treating, which is the difference between rotating a product and buying a second one.
- Sudden deaths in several birds are not a worm problem until something has ruled out the notifiable diseases. Start with the pillar on Philippine chicken diseases and report upward rather than dosing.

Ang bakuran ay ibang laban sa cage, at may sukat iyon
A free-ranging manok and a caged hen are not carrying the same risk, and the size of the difference has been measured across half a century of studies.
Shifaw et al. (2021) pooled 191 publications from 50 countries covering 1942 to 2019 and put overall helminth prevalence in chickens at 79.4%. Broken out by housing: free-range 84.8%, backyard 82.6%, deep litter 71.3%, cage 63.6%. Free-range against cage is a spread of 21.2 percentage points.
The mechanism is the ground and what lives in it, and this is where deworming stops being a drug question. Merck records that earthworms ingest Heterakis eggs and the larvae then survive for years inside the earthworm, that darkling beetles act as mechanical vectors, and that tapeworms need an intermediate host altogether: insects, beetles, ants, slugs, snails, earthworms or houseflies. Ascaridia galli eggs become infective in 10 to 12 days and stay viable in soil for up to two years, with worms reaching maturity 28 to 30 days after ingestion.
So a bird scavenging in the bakuran is doing the exact thing that completes three different life cycles. Merck is blunt about what is left: in range birds “the only option is to move to new pasture, although the benefit… will be of short duration”, and applying an approved insecticide to soil and litter while the premises are empty may interrupt the cycle by killing the intermediate host. Ang lupa ang kalaban, hindi ang manok. Ang bulate ay nasa bakuran bago pa ito nasa loob ng manok, at doon din ito babalik pagkatapos ng gamot kung ganoon pa rin ang basang sulok.
There is a small Philippine picture of this too. Castasus et al. (2025), in the Philippine Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, examined ten Hubbard Redbro chickens raised organically at the UPLB Institute of Animal Science Farm and found three species dominating: Ascaridia, Heterakis and Raillietina, the last of those a tapeworm. Ten birds is a very small sample and the paper’s own comparisons are not statistically significant, so take it as a species list rather than a prevalence estimate. It matches the Leyte list on two of three and adds the tapeworm.
Which points the practical work back at the housing rather than the pharmacy. Dry the wet corner, keep feed off the ground, and read the biosecurity piece on why segregation beats the thing with a receipt. The same argument runs through native chicken raising, where scavenging is the point of the system rather than a flaw in it.
The one dewormer the Philippine state actually funded
There is a Philippine anthelmintic with public money behind it, and almost nobody writing about deworming here mentions it.
Researchers at Capiz State University developed an ethnobotanical anthelmintic for free-range native chickens from the seeds of papaya, ipil-ipil and betel nut in powder form, registered as utility model 2-2015-000492 to inventors Bede P. Ozaraga, Ma. Sylvia I. Ozaraga and Marineth B. Barrios. DOST-PCAARRD’s dispatch of 24 November 2014 reports the trial dosing “2 g/kg body weight of formulated Ipil-ipil and betel nut”, with fecalysis before and after and efficacy judged on egg-per-gram counts. Its verdict: the ethnobotanical anthelmintic “has a comparable effect with the commercial dewormer”.
The distribution figures are the part that makes it real rather than a press release. 103,000 doses, 206 kg, produced and introduced to the market; 60,685 doses, 121.37 kg, distributed and sold to farmers in Aklan, Iloilo, Negros Occidental and in Regions 5, 7 and 9. The difference, 42,315 doses, was made and had not reached a farmer as of that dispatch.
Then the limits, and they are not small. The dispatch publishes no percent reduction, names no comparator product, and gives no withdrawal period for meat or eggs. None of papaya, ipil-ipil or betel nut carries a residue limit in PNS/BAFS 48:2022, which means there is no ceiling to sit under and no test that would find one. And betel nut is not a benign plant; areca preparations are pharmacologically active and a research dispatch is not a label. Kapag interesado ka rito, sa vet o sa DOST regional office ka magtanong, hindi sa internet.
What usually goes wrong
The mistake: Deworming on a fixed calendar because a guide said every three months.
Do this instead: Treat on evidence — a faecal check, or birds that are thin, dull and unthrifty — and rotate the active ingredient when you do.
The eight Leyte farms were on exactly that calendar and 92.2% of their samples were still positive. Merck asks for treatment "limited to birds with severe infestation that show clinical signs of disease" specifically to slow resistance.
The mistake: Buying a dewormer for coccidiosis after seeing bloody droppings.
Do this instead: Coccidia are protozoa, not worms. No anthelmintic on any of these labels touches Eimeria.
Eimeria turned up in 43.2% of the Leyte samples, sitting in the same results table as the worms, which is exactly how the two get confused at the agrivet counter.
The mistake: Selling or eating eggs during and straight after treatment without checking the pack.
Do this instead: Find the withdrawal period on the label before the first dose. If there is none printed, ask the agrivet or a vet rather than assuming zero.
PNS/BAFS 48:2022 sets a residue ceiling of 400 µg/kg for flubendazole in eggs and no waiting time for anything. The zero-day egg withdrawal people repeat comes off a UK Flubenvet label and is conditional on the correct inclusion rate.
The mistake: Treating the flock again when the first product seemed not to work.
Do this instead: Change the active ingredient rather than repeating it, and fix the ground in between.
Collins et al. found all eight Heterakis gallinarum isolates resistant to fenbendazole, at 19.35 to 66% efficacy. A repeat dose of a failing product selects harder for the worms that survived it.
The mistake: Dosing a flock that is mid-moult or visibly heavily infested, without asking anyone.
Do this instead: Ask a vet first. Both situations carry a named risk.

Bago ka bumili ng gamot
The order of operations here is unusual, because the cheapest step is the one that comes first and it is not a purchase.
Look at the birds and at the ground. Thin birds in good feed, droppings that have changed, a wet corner that never dries: those are the reasons to act. Then get a faecal check if a clinic or laboratory within reach will run one, because knowing whether there is a burden and roughly how large it is turns a guess into a decision, and it is the step the imported guides mention last if at all.
Only then the pack. Check what it is registered for, check what species it names, and check the withdrawal period for meat and for itlog before you open it. If the label is silent on any of those three, that is information about the product and not a reason to proceed.
And the part with no receipt is the part that lasts. Every one of these worms travels through soil, litter or an insect, so the wet corner, the feed on the ground and the earthworms under the drinker are doing more work than the bottle is. Sayang ang perang nauubos sa gamot kung ang lupa ang nagpapabalik ng bulate kada buwan.
There is no /presyo series behind any of this, and the honest reason is that the archive tracks published price series and nobody publishes one for veterinary products. The nearest entry in the gaps register is G-5, and that covers vaccines and biologics rather than anthelmintics, so a dewormer price is not even a logged absence yet. How often should I deworm my chickens in the Philippines?
There is no Philippine schedule to follow, and the one Philippine measurement argues against a fixed one. This page will not name one, because that answer has to come off a product label and a registration rather than off a blog. What the Philippine record does show is which anthelmintics the state has set food-residue limits for. PNS/BAFS 48:2022 lists 14 anthelmintic agents and only two of them name poultry at all, levamisole and flubendazole. Piperazine, which older backyard guides still recommend, is absent from the standard entirely, and fenbendazole appears in a row covering cattle, goat, horse, pig and sheep with no poultry line. Check the FDA Philippines registration on the pack, and ask the agrivet or a vet what it is licensed for.
How long after deworming can I eat the eggs? Show the answer
That number comes from the label of the product you used, and the Philippines does not publish it. PNS/BAFS 48:2022 sets a maximum residue limit for flubendazole in eggs of 400 µg/kg, and that is a ceiling for what may be found in the food, not a waiting time. The two are different things. On the UK Flubenvet label, Elanco states there is no withholding period for eggs when the product is used at the recommended inclusion rate, and seven days for meat. Penn State Extension says the same for fenbendazole used per label in the US. Neither is a Philippine authorisation. If the pack in your hand carries no withdrawal period at all, treat that as the answer it is.
Do free-range native chickens get more worms than caged birds? Show the answer
Yes, and the gap is measured. The meta-analysis by Shifaw et al. (2021), pooling 191 studies across 50 countries, puts helminth prevalence at 84.8% in free-range flocks and 82.6% in backyard flocks against 63.6% in cages, a spread of 21.2 percentage points between free-range and caged birds. The mechanism is the ground and what lives in it. Heterakis larvae survive for years inside earthworms, tapeworms need beetles, ants, snails, slugs or houseflies to complete their cycle, and Merck reports Ascaridia galli eggs staying viable in soil for up to two years. A scavenging manok eats all of that on purpose.
