Molting in a Philippine Backyard Flock

The short answer

Molting is the shedding and replacement of balahibo, and here it does not arrive on a season. The shortening-autumn trigger every guide names needs a daylight swing this country does not have: 148 minutes a year in Batanes, 35 in Tawi-Tawi, against 361 in Iowa. Ang nagsisimula nito sa manok ay ang pagkakalugon at ang edad, hindi ang kalendaryo. Expect two months off lay, and expect her back lower.

The whole country’s daylight swing, north to south

Here is the arithmetic that decides whether an imported molting page applies to you at all, and it is worth doing for the whole archipelago rather than for Manila alone.

Sunrise and sunset below come from the US Naval Observatory, computed for 2026 and read on 22 August 2026. Basco is the provincial capital of Batanes and about as far north as anyone in this country keeps manok. Bongao is the capital of Tawi-Tawi and about as far south. Des Moines is not a random comparison, kundi doon nakaupo ang Hy-Line International na siyang naglathala ng karamihan sa mga numerong sinusundan ng mga layer keeper dito.

Three readings come out of that, and only the third is new.

The first is that the whole spread across the Philippines is 113 minutes, Basco to Bongao. The country’s internal variation in seasonality is smaller than a third of Iowa’s seasonality. Ang buong Pilipinas ay iisang lugar pagdating sa haba ng araw.

The second is that the best case here is still not close. Basco, the most seasonal daylight any Filipino keeper can get, swings 41.0% of what Des Moines does. The third is the rate. Birds respond to a photoperiod that is changing, not to one that is short. Between 21 September and 21 October 2026, the month either side of the equinox when the Philippine day moves fastest, Manila loses 23 minutes of daylight. Spread across those 30 days that is about 5.4 minutes a week. A hen would need a very fine instrument to notice, at hindi iyon ang gumugulo sa bakuran mo tuwing Nobyembre.

One caveat before the mechanism, because this is not settled science and it should not be sold as such. Wild tropical birds are known to track photoperiod changes far smaller than the ones above, and the literature is clear that minimal equatorial changes can still be used as a cue. Nobody has tested that in backyard Gallus at 14° N, and that absence sits alongside the other Philippine blanks in the data gaps register.

The trigger in a chicken is broodiness, not autumn

The strongest evidence against the calendar story is not about the Philippines at all. It is about the bird.

Molting in birds generally is photoperiodic, and Berry (2003) in Poultry Science states the general rule plainly: “Decreasing day length initiates gonadal regression and allows molting to occur.” Then he gets to Gallus gallus specifically, and the rule changes. In the jungle fowl, the wild progenitor of the laying hen and a tropical bird of this region, “establishment of broodiness appears to be the primary initiating factor.” The broody hen goes off feed, the reproductive tract involutes, laying stops, and the feathers follow. She loses about 20% of her body weight sitting, roughly half of it reproductive tissue.

That is a molt with no autumn in it anywhere. The ancestor of your inahin evolved in a place with a day-length swing much like Bongao’s, and it got a perfectly functional molt out of a nest rather than out of a season.

Berry adds the second half, and it undercuts the seasonal story even at 40 degrees north: selective breeding for high egg output has “blunted the response of the commercial laying hen to exogenous environmental cues and reduced or eliminated the endogenous biological cues that coordinate initiation of seasonal molting.” A Hy-Line Brown is not the seasonal molter the backyard pages describe. She is a bird whose seasonal machinery has been partly bred out.

Two practical things follow, and both are Philippine.

A native inahin in a bakuran is the bird on this page most likely to molt on the ancestral schedule, because she is the one most likely to go broody in the first place. The sibling page puts one broody episode at about 47 days and notes that egg-type breeds show low broodiness while meat-type breeds show more. In a mixed bakuran flock the sequence is often nagpisa, then nangulot, then nagsimula ulit, and a keeper counting only the tray sees one long unexplained stop.

And Berry’s other line explains why commercial farms here are quiet on the subject: “most hens are sold and replaced just prior to the onset of natural molting.” The industry answer to a molt is a new flock. The layer pillar carries what a spent hen is worth at the gate, which is the number that decision actually turns on.

Is it a molt, or is it something that needs a vet?

A molt has a shape, and the shape is what separates it from the things that look like it. Ang tanong sa bakuran ay hindi kung nalalagas ang balahibo, kundi kung saan nagsimula ang paglagas at gaano kabilis.

Mississippi State University Extension gives the sequence: “The feathers are lost from the head first, followed in order by those on the neck, breast, body, wings, and tail.” It also gives the one diagnostic that costs nothing and is almost never mentioned on a Philippine page. Late molters, which are “generally the better laying hens”, shed fast, in 2 to 3 months, lose primary flight feathers in groups of two or more, and look ragged while they do it. Early molters, the poorer layers, keep “a smoother, better-groomed appearance”, drop primaries one at a time, and can take 4 to 6 months to finish.

So the scruffy hen is your good layer and the tidy one is not. Iyon ang kabaligtaran ng inaasahan ng karamihan, at libre itong tingnan.

One more correction, from the same source that supplies the shape. Berry notes that in the domestic hen the reproductive quiescence of a natural molt “has been found to be incomplete, and the hen often continues to lay eggs at a low rate for a prolonged period.” The clean “molting hens lay zero eggs” line on the American pages describes an induced molt, which is a different procedure done on purpose. A bakuran hen dropping feathers and still producing the odd itlog is not contradicting anything.

When feather loss is a veterinary call

  • Feather loss with mortality, respiratory signs, or anything neurological is not a molt and not a management question. Ang pinakamalapit na tanggapan sa karamihan ay ang LGU Veterinary, Agriculturist o Health Office.
  • Walang dosis, walang gamot at walang protocol na nakasulat sa page na ito, at hindi ako beterinaryo. No dosage, mineral level, fasting length or feed-withdrawal schedule for inducing a molt appears anywhere on this page, and the reason is set out below.
  • A hen already thin, already parasitised, or already sick has no business losing more body condition. Body condition is the first thing to check bago mag-alala tungkol sa balahibo.
  • Bring what you counted: ilang inahin, ilang itlog kada araw noong nakaraang buwan, saan nagsimula ang pagkalagas ng balahibo, at kung may namatay na.

Nothing Philippine says anything about forced molting, and there is a vote behind that

Induced molting is the deliberate version: a flock is pushed into a molt so that it comes back with better shell quality and a second laying cycle instead of being sold. This section says what is published about it and then declines to give you a method.

Start with what governs it here, kasi wala.

PNS/BAFS 312:2021, the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards code of practice for cage-free egg production, is the most recent Philippine national standard written specifically for laying hens. Searched end to end, it contains no mention of moulting in any spelling. PNS/BAFS 262:2018, the free range chicken standard, contains none either. The one Philippine layer number in the area is a lighting floor: PNS/BAFS 312 clause 6.7.1 requires “minimum period of 8-hour continuous light” and “minimum period of 6-hour continuous darkness” per 24 hours. Set that against the 14 hours Merck specifies at peak production and the Philippine floor sits 360 minutes under the breeder recommendation, which tells you it was written to stop bad practice rather than to describe good practice.

Now the international text, and this is the part nobody has written down for a Philippine reader.

The draft WOAH chapter on laying hen welfare, Chapter 7.Z, carried an article on moulting. Article 7.Z.20 reads that induced moulting “can lead to animal welfare problems if not well managed”, that “it is preferable for other management strategies to be used instead”, and that where it is practised, “methods that do not involve withdrawal of feed” should be used, with light and water available at all times and only birds in good body condition moulted.

That chapter is not in force. At the 88th General Session in Paris in May 2021 it went to a recorded electronic vote: 53 members supported adoption, 41 opposed, 22 abstained, and the report states it “was not adopted, as the support did not reach the two-thirds majority required by the General Rules.” The Philippines is listed among the 41 that opposed it.

So the only sentence anywhere that says feed should not be withdrawn to induce a molt is a sentence in a draft its own membership voted down, and this country voted against it. That is the state of the record, and a keeper deciding what to do is deciding it alone.

Eight weeks with no itlog is ₱5,284.16 at the June 2026 gate

Put the money on it, because the choice between waiting out a molt and replacing the bird is a money question and nothing else. Ang puhunan sa paghihintay ay ang nawawalang itlog, at ang kita sa hindi paghihintay ay ang halaga ng inahin sa timbangan.

Berry (2003) defines the length of a molt as the time from initiation to 50% egg production and reports that induced molts “generally range from 5 to 9 wk in length”, with flocks fasted up to 10 days producing their first eggs within 5 weeks and reaching 50% by 8 weeks. Take the 8 weeks as the planning figure. Twenty inahin that were running at a 70% hen-day rate produce nothing across 56 days, and at the June 2026 PSA household egg farmgate of ₱6.74 a piece that is ₱5,284.16 of gross gate revenue that does not happen. The hens eat throughout, so the real hole is wider than that by whatever the layer ration costs over two months.

And she does not come back to where she was. Gickel et al. (2025) followed a Lohmann Brown flock through a molt and measured it about 24 percentage points below its pre-molt production seven weeks after the molt completed; the sibling page prints that series in full. So the ₱5,284.16 buys a smaller flock, not the old one restored.

Against that sits the bird herself. The PSA household layer chicken farmgate read ₱117.47 per kilo liveweight in June 2026, which is what a spent hen fetches. The layer pillar states the honest limit on that figure: the series is per kilo and no Philippine liveweight for a spent commercial hen exists to multiply it by, so it does not become pesos per bird here. What it does establish is that the alternative to eight weeks of nothing is not zero. It has a price series, and the molt does not.

One more figure worth holding, from the month-by-month lay curve: a hen has to lay about sixteen eggs a month before she is worth feeding. A molting hen lays none for most of two months and comes back below her old rate. Kaya ang tanong ay hindi kung magpapalagas ba siya, kundi kung sulit pa bang pakainin siya habang ginagawa niya iyon.

What actually starts one in a bakuran

Strip the calendar out and what is left is a short list, and every item on it is a management event with a date rather than a season. Balikan mo ang nakaraang dalawang linggo bago tumigil ang manok, at halos palaging naroon ang sagot, sa sako o sa inuman o sa pugad.

Age. The commonest cause, and the one nobody can put a Philippine number on. Every guide repeats that a first molt comes at around eighteen months. That figure is uncited on every page carrying it, Merck has no molting article at all, and this site will not print it as fact.

A feed change. Berry’s entire review is a catalogue of nutritional imbalances that stop lay: rations under 0.3% calcium, sodium-deficient rations, high zinc, high iodine. Ang bakuran na naubusan ng layer feeds at napilitang magpakain ng puro darak nang dalawang linggo ay nakagawa na ng magaspang na bersiyon ng parehong bagay, nang hindi sinasadya.

Water. Berry records that withholding water was once part of induced molting protocols and that “at present, withholding water is not recommended” on mortality grounds. The sibling page carries the recovery curve for an empty drinker, and it is a fortnight.

Broodiness. Covered above, and the one most likely to be the real answer in a mixed bakuran flock.

Light, but only where there are lights. Merck notes that “production may decrease if day length or light intensity is decreased during the laying period.” That is a real mechanism, and in the Philippines it is a mechanism about switches rather than about seasons. A keeper who has been running a bulb to reach 14 hours and then stops has cut the photoperiod by more than the Philippine year moves it in a decade.

What usually goes wrong

  1. The mistake: Waiting for autumn, or blaming the ber months when the feathers start dropping.

    Do this instead: Date the event and look for what changed in the fortnight before it: the sack, the drinker, a new bird, a broody hen.

    The Philippine photoperiod moves at most about 5.4 minutes a week, and the whole annual swing runs 35 to 148 minutes depending on where you are. There is no season here to blame.

  2. The mistake: Culling the scruffy hen and keeping the neat one.

    Do this instead: Read the primaries. Groups of two or more shed at once is a late molter, and MSU Extension puts late molters among the better layers.

    Early molters look tidier, drop single primaries and take 4 to 6 months instead of 2 to 3. Culling on appearance selects against your best producers.

  3. The mistake: Trying an induced molt off a foreign blog to get a second cycle out of the flock.

    Do this instead: Do not, and certainly not off a page. No Philippine standard covers it and the international draft that did was voted down.

    Berry records paralysis in many hens within 3 days on a low-calcium molting ration and higher mortality than unmolted controls. These are commercial protocols run under supervision, not backyard procedures.

  4. The mistake: Assuming a molting hen lays nothing at all.

    Do this instead: Keep counting. A natural molt often leaves a hen laying at a low rate for a long stretch.

    Berry states the reproductive quiescence of a natural molt is incomplete. The zero-eggs figure comes from induced molts, which are a different procedure.

The gap, named

Three things on this page should have Philippine sources and do not.

There is no published Philippine figure for the age at first molt, the duration of a natural molt in a tropical open-sided kulungan, or the proportion of Philippine layer flocks that are induced to molt rather than replaced. The most recent survey of the sector, De Castro et al. (2025) in the Philippine Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, interviewed 100 commercial layer farms in Batangas about housing, feeding, water, records and egg marketing, and molting is not among the practices it reports. That is not a criticism of the paper. It is the observation that the question is not being asked.

So a Philippine keeper watching her flock lose feathers is reading American pages about a season that does not happen here, adjudicating between an Alabama physiology review and an extension service in Mississippi, and finding that her own country’s standards are silent and her own country voted against the one document that was not. The list at the top of this page is what survives that. It is shorter than the imported version and every line of it has a date attached.

What month do chickens molt in the Philippines?

There is no molting month here, and the question imports an assumption that does not survive the latitude. Every page that names a season names autumn, because the annual daylight swing at 40 degrees north is 361 minutes and a shortening day is a real signal there. Computed from US Naval Observatory sunrise and sunset for 2026, the swing is 148 minutes at Basco in Batanes, 104 at Manila and 35 at Bongao in Tawi-Tawi. Even the northernmost inhabited point in the country moves 41.0% as much daylight across a year as Iowa does, and the fastest the Manila photoperiod ever changes is about 5.4 minutes a week. A flock that stopped in November stopped for a reason that has a date on it, not a season.

How long does a molting hen stop laying? Show the answer

The honest answer is that nobody has published the natural figure the backyard pages repeat, and this site will not print an uncited one. What is measured is the induced molt, which is a deliberate commercial procedure. Berry (2003) in Poultry Science defines its length as the time from the start of fasting to 50% egg production and reports that induced molts generally run 5 to 9 weeks, with flocks fasted up to 10 days laying their first eggs within 5 weeks and reaching 50% by 8 weeks. Gickel et al. (2025) followed a Lohmann Brown flock that came back about 24 percentage points below where it started. Plan on two months of no useful production and a smaller flock afterwards.

Is force molting legal in the Philippines? Show the answer

No Philippine standard addresses it either way, which is not the same as permission and not the same as a ban. PNS/BAFS 312:2021, the cage-free egg production code, and PNS/BAFS 262:2018, the free range chicken standard, both contain no mention of moulting at all. The international text that would have said something, WOAH draft Chapter 7.Z, was put to a vote at the 88th General Session in Paris in May 2021 and was not adopted, with 53 members supporting, 41 opposing and 22 abstaining. The Philippines was one of the 41 that opposed adoption. The article recommending against feed withdrawal therefore has no standing anywhere, including here.

How do I know it is a molt and not mites or disease? Show the answer

Look at where the feathers went and at the rest of the flock. Mississippi State University Extension describes the molting sequence as head first, then neck, breast, body, wings and tail, and it runs over weeks rather than overnight. Bare patches around the vent and under the wings with the head still fully feathered, or a bird losing feathers while the flock around her is untouched, point somewhere else. A molt does not come with dead birds, respiratory noise or anything neurological, and any stop that does is a call to the LGU veterinarian rather than a management question.
