Water: The Cheapest Thing You Are Getting Wrong

The short answer

Weigh one day of feed and multiply by 1.7. That is the litres your flock needs at 21 °C, and Philippine ambient pushes it well above that. Merck calls water the nutrient “required in greater amounts than any other”. Ang problema ay hindi ang tubig. Ang problema ay ilan ang inuman at gaano kadalas nililinis.

Water costs almost nothing and it is the input a bakuran flock most often runs short of, because the thing that runs short is not the water. It is the drinking edge, the container count and the scrubbing. Merck puts water first among nutrients and then declines to give you a number, and that refusal is where every honest answer starts.

Nobody publishes litres per bird, and Merck says why

There is no litres-per-bird figure worth carrying, and the Merck Veterinary Manual states the reason directly: water intake moves with “environmental temperature, relative humidity, salt and protein levels of the diet, birds’ productivity … and the individual bird’s ability to resorb water in the kidney”, so “specific water requirements cannot be given for all circumstances” (Nutritional Requirements of Poultry).

What is published instead is a ratio to feed, and four sources give four of them. Iba-iba, at hindi iyon aksidente.

Every figure read from the source document on 22 August 2026. The four are not averaged, because an average of four sources written for four conditions is a number nobody stated.

That last row is the useful one here, and it is the one a Philippine keeper should hold. Aviagen says the drinker’s flow rate must allow a hot-weather bird to reach 1.8 to 2.2 litres per kilo. Kaya kung 1.5 lang ang lumalabas sa flock mo sa tanghali ng Abril, hindi ka nagse-save ng tubig. Ang inuman ang kulang, hindi ang uhaw ng manok.

The ratio is also why this site’s water calculator asks what your flock eats rather than how many birds you have. A ratio travels between broilers, layers and native manok far better than an absolute litres-per-head figure does, and the tool says so on its own page.

Run it forward once and the scale stops being abstract. Fifty broilers to a 1.7 kg Philippine target liveweight, at the 1.83 feed conversion this site plans on rather than the brochure figure, eat about 156 kg of feed. At Aviagen’s midpoint 1.7 litres per kilo that is 264 litres of drinking water across the batch. Thirteen 20-litre pails, and a bit. At 21 °C, which your kulungan sees at dawn in January and never again.

The one Philippine table that puts a number on a hen

On page 21 of Tips on Poultry Raising, a guide hosted by DA Regional Field Office II in Cagayan Valley, is a layer feeding table with a water column, and it is the closest thing to a published Philippine per-bird intake figure this site has found. The column is headed “Water Requirement gal/100 birds” and it carries two rows: moderate temperature = 5 to 7, high temperature = 7.9.

Three honest limits before anybody plans on it. The table is for White Leghorn layers and is indexed by body weight and eggs per 100 hens per day, so it describes a commercial line and not the inahin scratching in your bakuran. The field office does not define moderate or high, so the 299 mL is a category rather than a temperature. And the file’s own metadata dates it to March 2004, posted to the regional office’s site in 2018. Dalawampung taon na ang pinakabagong numerong Pilipino sa tanong na ito, at iyon mismo ang balita.

It still matters, kasi may kinakalaban itong isang tahimik na alamat. The figure that circulates on backyard blogs is 250 to 300 mL a hen a day, and this site refused to print it because every trail led to another blog. The DA field office’s own high-temperature row is 299 mL. The folklore was right and nobody had found its parent. That does not turn a blog into a source, but it does mean a keeper using 300 mL a hen as a planning figure in Philippine heat is not inventing anything.

Heat is a multiplier, and the argument lives on another page

Water need rises about 6.5% for every 1 °C above 21 °C, and in tropical areas Aviagen says high environmental temperature “can double the water consumption”. Run that rate against the PAGASA mean daily maximum for April at Science Garden, 34.6 °C, and the uplift is 88.4% over the 21 °C baseline.

That is one sentence of a long argument, and the argument is not this page’s. The heat-stress article holds the PAGASA station tables, the count of station-months above the Merck comfort band, the drinking-water temperature cliff at 30 °C and the reason a black drum in the sun is a heater rather than a tank. It is also where the summer mortality question is answered honestly, which is to say not entirely.

How many drinkers, and how far a bird should walk

The Philippine document that answers this is the same DA Regional Field Office II guide, and it gives watering space two ways at once, in centimetres of drinking edge per bird and in whole fountains per 100 birds.

For 50 layers that is 100 to 125 cm of drinking edge, or three 2-gallon fountains. For 50 chicks in a brooder it is 25 cm, or one 1-gallon jar. Notice the direction of travel: a layer is owed four to five times the edge a day-old sisiw is, and the container that was correct in week one is wrong by week nine.

Three rules sit on top of the table and none of them is in it.

Two drinking points, minimum, per bird. DA Administrative Order 12 s. 2002 says at 12.5 that “each bird shall have access to at least two drinking points”. One long trough with adequate edge still fails this, because a bird that has been driven off the only container by a tandang has no second option. The same clause gives 10 cm of trough space per bird for adult fowl in laying cages, which is four to five times the field office’s floor-layer figure and a good reminder that a caged bird cannot walk to a better spot.

No bird moves more than 1.5 metres. The field office again, in its hot-weather Water Supplies section: “ideally, both feed and water should be distributed so that no bird has to move more than 1 1/2 meters to get its requirements.” Sa isang kulungan na 3 metro ang haba, ibig sabihin niyan ay hindi isa ang inuman kundi dalawa, isa sa bawat dulo.

Nipples are counted differently. Aviagen’s post-brooding minimum is 12 birds per nipple under 3 kg and 9 birds per nipple over it, with the caveat that the real number depends on flow rate, climate and nipple design. A nipple line in a bakuran is rare, but a keeper who has one should count against that and not against the fountain rows.

Potable, and no number after it

Ask what the Philippine standard for poultry drinking water is and the honest answer is that there is not one with a figure in it.

PNS/BAFS 184:2016, the Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices for Chickens, requires at 5.2.3 that “potable water should be used” and that only water “of known and acceptable biological and mineralogical quality” goes to stock. It defines potable at 4.11 as “water that is free from diseases producing organisms and chemical substances deleterious to health”. No parts per million, and no named standard to comply with. PNS/BAFS 262:2018 for free-range chicken says chickens should be able to “eat and drink freely” and stops there.

DA Administrative Order 12 goes furthest and then falls short in a way worth recording. Clause 12.4 says “water shall be tested for chemical content and microbiological counts annually. Refer to Appendix IV.” The copy mirrored by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society ends at Appendix III, which is a lighting table. Read on 22 August 2026, the order requires an annual test against criteria that are not in the published document. That is one more entry for the register of things nobody publishes here.

So the only numeric criteria a keeper can actually use are a breeder company’s. Aviagen Table 7.2, p.109 of the Ross Broiler Management Handbook 2025:

Aviagen’s own note on where the trouble is likely reads as if it were written for a Philippine bakuran: municipal supply “usually has fewer water quality issues”, while “water from wells or boreholes may have excessive nitrate levels and high bacterial counts due to runoff from fertilized fields.” Kung nasa gilid ka ng palayan at balon ang gamit mo, iyon mismo ang inilalarawan.

The drinker nobody scrubs

Here is the failure this article is named after. Ang tubig ay libre. Ang oras mo hindi, and the thing that actually goes wrong in a bakuran is a container that is topped up daily and washed monthly.

Aviagen puts the mechanism plainly: in hot weather, flush the drinker lines at regular intervals “to ensure that water does not get too warm and to reduce biofilm formation”, and drinkers must be “maintained in clean condition, free from litter and fecal material”. Biofilm is not dirt you can see. It is a slime layer that grows on the inside of a container and reseeds the water every time you fill it.

The DA field office named the Philippine version of this, and named the material: backyard raisers use bamboo waterers because they are cheap, “but there is a great tendency for slime (lumot) to develop and oftentimes they do not last very long. They need constant changing.” Its recommendation for shape is the same argument from the other end, that a waterer should be semi-circular and fairly wide “to facilitate cleaning”. A narrow-necked container you cannot get a hand into is a container that never gets scrubbed.

Then the counter-intuitive line, from the same guide’s hot-weather section, which contradicts the reflex most keepers have in April:

In extremely hot weather, when water consumption may be doubled to prevent heat prostration, do not place drugs or other substances in the water that might decrease its palatability and, therefore, its uptake.

Merck supplies the other half of the mechanism: drinking water “can contribute appreciably to the overall sodium consumption of the bird”, and dietary sodium should be cut if the local supply is high in it. Dalawang bagay ang sinasabi niyan nang sabay. Ang sachet na ibinuhos mo sa inuman ay maaaring bawasan ang inom, at ang tubig mo mismo ay maaaring may dalang asin na hindi mo binibilang.

Call the LGU veterinarian

No rate for electrolytes or vitamins per litre of drinking water appears anywhere on this site, and that is deliberate. Every published figure located is a feed formulation in mEq per kilo of ration, and converting one into the other by eye adds a salt load on top of a heat load.

  • Use the product label. It was written by somebody who tested that product.
  • Ask your municipal or city agriculture office for the livestock inspector or the LGU veterinarian if the label is unclear. That is the person with a phone number.
  • A flock whose water intake drops suddenly is a flock to look at, not a flock that has learned restraint. Merck lists reduced water intake first among the signs a bird is unwell, and DA AO 12 at 14.1 does the same.

Eight hours, twelve hours, thirty-six hours

Water deprivation has published thresholds, and they are shorter than most keepers assume.

Notice that the Philippine regulatory limit, eight hours, is stricter than the Merck harm threshold of twelve. A keeper who leaves for the day at six in the morning and gets back at seven in the evening has been away thirteen hours. An empty fountain at nine in the morning of an April day is not a small oversight; it is most of the window.

Two sources converge on the fix and they arrived at it independently. DA AO 12 at 12.3: “a day’s water requirement shall be stored in case of water shortage.” Aviagen, p.57: “ideally, sufficient storage to provide 24 hours of water at maximum consumption is required.” One day, shaded, on both a Philippine welfare code and a breeder handbook. Iyon ang tanging bahagi ng pahinang ito na may presyo, at maliit ang presyo.

What usually goes wrong

  1. The mistake: Sizing water by the container rather than by the drinking edge.

    Do this instead: Count centimetres of edge per bird, then count containers. DA Regional Field Office II gives 2 to 2.5 cm a bird for layers and 0.5 cm for chicks.

    A 20-litre pail holds a day of water for 50 birds and offers one bird at a time a place to stand. Volume and access are different problems and only one of them is solved by a bigger container.

  2. The mistake: One drinker for the whole kulungan.

    Do this instead: At least two drinking points per bird, and none more than 1.5 metres away.

    DA AO 12 s. 2002 § 12.5 requires two, and the DA field-office guide sets the 1.5 metre walk. A single point is a point a dominant bird can hold.

  3. The mistake: Topping up daily and scrubbing occasionally.

    Do this instead: Wash the container out properly, and choose one wide enough to get a hand inside.

    Aviagen names biofilm and requires drinkers free of litter and faecal material. The DA guide names lumot in bamboo waterers specifically and says they need constant changing.

  4. The mistake: Pouring vitamins or electrolytes into the drinker when the afternoon turns hot.

    Do this instead: Use the label rate, or nothing, and ask an LGU veterinarian.

    DA Regional Field Office II advises against putting substances in the water in extreme heat precisely because they can reduce palatability and uptake, which is the opposite of what you wanted.

  5. The mistake: Assuming a well beside a rice field is fine because the water looks clear.

    Do this instead: Test it. Aviagen Table 7.2 gives the thresholds: nitrate nitrogen 10 ppm, iron 0.3 ppm, zero coliforms.

    Aviagen names wells and boreholes as the likely source of excessive nitrate and high bacterial counts from runoff off fertilised fields, and clarity tells you nothing about either.

What this actually costs

Almost nothing, which is the whole argument. A second plastic fountain, a scrubbing brush, and a shaded drum are the entire shopping list, and the archive holds no series that tracks any of them. No Philippine agency monitors the price of a drinker, so there is nothing to link here and pretending otherwise would be worse than saying so.

What the archive does hold is the price of the thing you lose. A day-old chick was monitored by the Bureau of Animal Industry at ₱33.50 per head in the week of 13 July 2026 (/presyo/doc-price), and commercial broiler farmgate at ₱127.00 per kilo in the same report (/presyo/broiler-farmgate). A 1.7 kg bird lost in week five is over ₱200 of liveweight and the feed that built it. Isang inuman ang halaga niyan, at hindi pa isang buong sako.

The three cheap things, in the order they are worth doing: add a second container before you add anything else, put it where the birds already are rather than where the tap is, and scrub both properly once a week. The feed pillar is where the expensive decisions live and what a batch eats to market weight is what they cost. This page is the one where the fix is a pail.

How much water does a chicken need per day in the Philippines?

No source publishes a litres-per-bird figure you can trust, and the Merck Veterinary Manual says why in one sentence: water intake moves with temperature, humidity, the salt and protein in the ration, and how fast the bird is growing or laying, so "specific water requirements cannot be given for all circumstances". What is published is a ratio to feed. Aviagen puts it at 1.6 to 1.8 litres per kilo of feed at 21 °C and Merck at roughly twice the feed weight under thermoneutral conditions. The nearest thing to a Philippine per-bird figure is a DA Regional Field Office II layer table, which works out to about 189 to 265 mL a hen a day at moderate temperature and about 299 mL at high temperature. Weigh a day of feed and multiply; that is the only route to a number for your own flock.

How many drinkers do 50 chickens need? Show the answer

DA Regional Field Office II publishes watering space in centimetres of drinking edge per bird, and its layer row is 2 to 2.5 cm a bird or six 2-gallon fountains per 100 birds. For 50 birds that is 100 to 125 cm of edge, or three 2-gallon fountains. Its day-old to 4 weeks row is 0.5 cm a bird or two 1-gallon fountains per 100 chicks. DA Administrative Order 12 s. 2002 adds a rule the space figure does not carry: every bird shall have access to at least two drinking points, so one large container is wrong even when its edge is long enough. The same DA field-office guide also says no bird should have to move more than 1.5 metres to reach feed or water.

Is tap water or well water safe for chickens? Show the answer

The Philippine standards say potable and stop there. PNS/BAFS 184:2016 defines potable water at 4.11 as water free from disease-producing organisms and chemical substances deleterious to health, and 5.2.3 requires potable water without naming a numeric limit. The only numbers a keeper can actually check a well against are Aviagen Table 7.2 in the Ross Broiler Management Handbook 2025: total dissolved solids under 1,000 ppm is good, pH 6.5 to 8.5 is satisfactory, nitrate nitrogen maximum 10 ppm, iron under 0.3 ppm, and zero coliform colony forming units per mL. Aviagen also notes that water from wells or boreholes may carry excessive nitrate and high bacterial counts from runoff off fertilised fields, which is the ordinary case beside a rice field.

How long can chickens go without water? Show the answer

The Merck Veterinary Manual is specific and it is not a long window. Water deprivation for more than 12 hours "has an adverse effect on growth of young poultry and egg production of layers", and deprivation for more than 36 hours "results in a marked increase in mortality of both young and mature poultry". The Philippine rule is stricter in the one place it applies. DA Administrative Order 12 s. 2002 says at 21.4 that chickens shall not be left without water for more than eight hours, which sits in the section covering marketing and sale yards rather than the section on your own kulungan. Section 12.3 of the same order also requires that a day's water requirement be stored against a supply failure.

Read the product label and ask an LGU veterinarian, and note that one Philippine source argues against the reflex entirely. DA Regional Field Office II writes that in extremely hot weather, when water consumption may be doubled to prevent heat prostration, do not place drugs or other substances in the water that might decrease its palatability and therefore its uptake.
