Heat Stress: Prevention That Actually Works

The short answer

Water first, then shade, then how many manok are in the kulungan. A fan is fourth and a mister is usually wrong. Merck puts poultry comfort at 18.3 to 23.8 °C and humidity up to 40%; across 36 station-months at three PAGASA stations, not one meets either half. Hindi ito emergency dito. Ito na ang normal.

The comfort band, held against 36 Philippine station-months

The Merck Veterinary Manual gives backyard poultry an ideal of “18.3–23.8°C (65–75°F), with a relative humidity of up to 40%” and says chickens “start to feel heat stress at environmental temperatures > 23.8°C (75°F)”. That is a clean, quotable threshold from a Tier-1 veterinary source. Below is what happens when you put it beside the PAGASA normals instead of beside an Ohio forecast.

Every figure read off the station PDFs on 22 August 2026. Note the Iloilo window is 1991 to 2009 and the other two are 1991 to 2020, so the three are not one dataset and should not be ranked against each other.

Count the cells. All 36 station-months are above 23.8 °C on the monthly mean, and all 36 are above it on the mean daily maximum. None of the 36 comes within 28 percentage points of the 40% humidity half; the driest month in the set is April at Science Garden, at 68%. Ang pinakatuyong buwan sa listahan ay halos doble pa rin ng gusto ng manwal.

Science Garden’s April mean daily maximum is 34.6 °C, which is 10.8 °C over the threshold, on an average afternoon rather than a bad one. That is a normal, not a record. The coop pillar carries the record, which is 38.5 °C at the same station, and prices what a roof does about it.

One honest limit before the rest of the page rests on this. These are outdoor station normals, sinukat sa bakod ng PAGASA at hindi sa loob ng kulungan mo. A closed coop under GI sheet runs above the air outside it, so the reading that matters is the one on your own wall. The station figures set the floor, not the ceiling.

Seven months of the year the birds do not cool off at 5 a.m.

The mean daily minimum is the number nobody looks at, and it is the one that decides whether “cool them down at night” is advice or wishful thinking. At Science Garden the average pre-dawn low is above Merck’s 23.8 °C from April through October. At Iloilo it is the same seven months. At Davao it is ten, March through December.

That is 24 of 36 station-months, or 66.7%, where the birds are above the threshold at the coolest hour the month has. It also explains a thing keepers notice and guides do not: a flock that seems to recover overnight in Baguio does not recover overnight in Davao, and the same advice cannot be true in both.

What this changes in practice is when you do the work. Catching, moving, weighing, vaccinating, dumadagdag lahat iyan sa init na dala na ng manok. Aviagen says plainly that catching should be done at night in hot weather, and then says the quiet part: “in some areas nighttime temperatures can still be high and RH will increase after sunset” (Ross Note, July 2016). Sa Davao, iyon ang buong taon. The night shift still beats the afternoon; it just buys less than the manual implies.

Humidity is why the mister everyone recommends is usually wrong here

The first purchase every foreign heat-stress page suggests is a mister on a garden hose, and the manufacturer of the birds says not to use one in this air. Aviagen: “Evaporative cooling should not be used if RH is greater than 75% as it increases the RH of the environment and if RH levels are already high, the birds’ ability to lose heat will be limited.” Its rule for spray nozzles in open-sided housing is the same 75%, and it adds that nozzles must run only while circulation fans are working.

Now the count. 32 of the 36 station-months, 88.9%, have a monthly mean relative humidity above 75%. Every month at Iloilo and every month at Davao is above it. The only four that are not are February, March, April and May at Science Garden, which is the Metro Manila dry season and nothing else. Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija, which is as close to a poultry province as this country has, runs 79 to 89% and never drops below the ceiling in any month.

Two caveats, both of which cut the same way and neither of which rescues the mister. Humidity falls through the afternoon as temperature rises, which is exactly when you would switch a mister on, so the honest reading of the 32 is an upper bound on the ban rather than a proof of it. And PAGASA publishes monthly means only, so nobody can resolve this from the normals. Ang mabibili mong hygrometer ang tanging sagot dito, hindi ang PDF at hindi ako. If the wall reads under 75% on a hot afternoon, a mister plus moving air is defensible. Above it you are adding water to air the bird already cannot dry itself into, and wet litter is the second bill.

The drinker you sized in December is half a drinker by April

Water is the cheapest lever and the one most often under-provided, kasi ang tinitingnan ay kung may laman ang inuman at hindi kung ilan ang inuman. Aviagen puts requirement up “approximately 6.5% per 1°C (1.8°F) over 21°C (69.8°F)” and adds that “in tropical areas, high environmental temperature can double the water consumption.”

Run that rate against the PAGASA normals and the scale is not subtle. At the Science Garden annual mean of 27.8 °C the uplift is 44.2% over the 21 °C baseline, all year, every year. At the April mean daily maximum of 34.6 °C it is 88.4%, which is Aviagen’s “can double” arriving on an ordinary Quezon City afternoon. Both of those are this page multiplying two published figures that were never measured against each other, so treat them as scale rather than as a reading.

Three things follow, and only the first costs money.

Add drinkers, not trips. Aviagen sizes drinkers at 12 birds per nipple for birds grown under 3 kg, or 8 bell drinkers per 1,000 chicks. For 50 manok that is five nipples or one bell drinker as a floor in ordinary conditions, and the floor is not where you want to be at an 88% uplift. Sa 20 hanggang 50 na manok, mas mura ang pangalawang inuman kaysa sa isang electric fan, at mas malaki ang naibibigay.

Keep the water cool, and know where the cliff is. Aviagen’s table is blunt: ideal is 18 to 21 °C, above 30 °C “too warm, birds consume less water”, and at 44 °C and above “birds refuse to drink”. A black plastic drum in the sun is a heater, and the fix is free. Aviagen’s own list is flushing the lines, shading or insulating the pipe, burying the tank, and “avoiding the use of black or dark colored water tanks.” Ang itim na drum sa hapon ay hindi imbakan ng tubig, kalan iyon.

Watch the water-to-feed ratio if you can measure it. Normal is 1.7:1 to 1.8:1 and heat takes it to 2.2:1. A backyard keeper rarely weighs either, but a flock whose water use has not moved while the afternoons got hotter has a drinker problem, not a stoic constitution.

Shade, airflow and how many birds are in the kulungan

Air movement is the lever between water and the wallet, and there is a published target for it. Aviagen wants circulation fans producing “an average of 3 m/sec (591 ft/min) air speed at the level of the birds” in open-sided housing, and warns that on young birds air movement is a chill risk rather than a help before about ten days of age.

Below that there is no figure, and I am not going to invent one. Nobody publishes an air speed for a bakuran with a nipa roof and no electricity, and no Philippine agency I could find on 22 August 2026 publishes a poultry heat threshold at all. What is left is the direction of the answer: open the long sides, clear whatever grew across the windward wall since last summer, and do not let a tarpaulin hung against rain in July still be there in April.

Stocking density is the lever most keepers refuse and the one with the clearest mechanism. Aviagen says stocking density “may need to be reduced” during hot weather and makes the decision depend on insulation, ventilation type, humidity and whether the house is open-sided. Every one of those factors points the same way in a bakuran. What the Philippine standard allows per square metre is the arithmetic for that, and the honest version is that a coop sized to the standard in January is not sized for April. Mas mabilis ang bagsak ng dalawampung manok sa kulungang para sa dalawampu kaysa sa labinlima sa parehong kulungan.

Shade is the free one. It is also the one where a photograph of an American run under a maple tree quietly misleads: the shade that matters here is over the roof and over the drinker, not over a lawn.

Feed at the cool end of the day, and the trap in doing it

Aviagen recommends “feeding birds during the coolest part of the day” and then immediately names the failure mode: “if limiting feeding to the cooler part of the day, care must be taken to ensure that feed intake is not reduced. Birds must not go without feed for too long as this will have an impact on growth.”

That warning is the whole reason this lever is listed fifth rather than second. Moving the ration to early morning and late afternoon costs nothing and does help, because digestion itself produces heat the bird then has to shed. Pulling the feed away at 11 a.m. and putting it back at 5 p.m. is a different act, and what it buys in comfort it can hand straight back in growth. What a batch eats to market weight does not shrink because the afternoon was hot; the birds just take longer to get there.

The nutrition side of the same page is real but is not a backyard lever. Fat rather than carbohydrate as the energy source, higher amino acid digestibility rather than more protein, and low fines in the feed all reduce the heat a bird generates while eating. Those are decisions a feed mill makes, hindi ikaw sa palengke. What is actually in a sack is the page for that argument.

Electrolytes: every published number is a feed formula

No line on this page gives a rate, and the reason is that I could not find one a keeper with a gallon jug can use.

The gap between the first three rows and the fourth is where most Philippine advice on this topic lives, and most of it is a number somebody rounded off a feed spec. Madali iyang gawing kutsara kada galon, pero hula pa rin iyon. A salt load on top of a heat load is a real way to make a bird worse, and the honest position is that the sachet in front of you has a label and the label was written by somebody who tested that sachet.

Call the LGU veterinarian

A bird that is panting with its wings held away from its body is thermoregulating and that is normal above 23.8 °C. A bird that has stopped drinking, gone down and stayed down, or is convulsing is past that, and heat prostration is treated in minutes rather than hours.

  • Call your municipal or city agriculture office and ask for the livestock inspector or the LGU veterinarian. That is the person with a phone number, not a distant specialist.
  • Bring the ambient reading and the time of day. A death at 2 p.m. in a closed coop and a death at 6 a.m. are different problems and the reading is what separates them.
  • Sudden mortality across a whole flock is not automatically heat. The disease pillar sets out what else looks like this and which patterns you are obliged to report.

The national numbers do not show the summer collapse

Here is a finding that runs against this article’s own grain, and it is in rather than out because leaving it out would be dishonest.

If Philippine heat were destroying flocks at the scale the foreign pages imply, it should show up in the PSA quarterly series, where Q2 covers April to June. Take every complete year from 2000 to 2025 in this archive, express each quarter as a percentage of that year’s average quarter so the long-run growth trend drops out, and average across the 26 years.

Chicken production does dip in Q2, to 92.1, and Q2 is the lowest quarter in 12 of the 26 years. Egg production does not dip at all: Q2 at 99.3 is above Q1 at 96.8, and Q1 is the lowest quarter in 14 of the 26 years. Ang tag-init ay hindi ang pinakamahinang quarter ng itlog. Hindi kahit kailan.

And the chicken dip cannot be attributed to heat from this data, because Q4 is 114.6. A Christmas peak that large is a placement decision made in September, and a Q2 trough sits exactly where you would expect the trough of that same cycle to land. Walang paraan para paghiwalayin ang init at ang desisyon ng grower gamit ang isang national quarterly series. Anybody who tells you the summer dip is heat has not shown their work, and neither have I.

What that leaves is a gap rather than an answer. No Philippine source publishes backyard flock performance, which is gap G-1 in this site’s register, so there is no series in which a bakuran heat loss could appear even if it were enormous. What the mortality record does and does not hold works the same absence from the other end. The levers on this page are defensible because the mechanism is published and the climate figures are measured. Their size in a Philippine bakuran is not measured by anyone.

What usually goes wrong

  1. The mistake: Treating a hot week as the event and the rest of the year as normal.

    Do this instead: Set the coop up for the standing condition, then handle the peaks. Shade over the drinker and a second waterer are permanent fixtures, not April purchases.

    All 36 station-months checked here are above the Merck threshold on the monthly mean, and 66.7% of them are above it on the mean daily minimum. There is no off-season to return to.

  2. The mistake: Buying a mister because every guide online recommends one.

    Do this instead: Read a hygrometer on the coop wall first. Above 75% relative humidity, add moving air instead.

    Aviagen forbids evaporative cooling above 75% RH in its own document, and 32 of the 36 station-months here are above that ceiling on the monthly mean.

  3. The mistake: Storing water in a black drum in the sun.

    Do this instead: Shade it, bury it, or use a pale container. Aviagen names dark tanks specifically.

    Above 30 °C birds drink less and at 44 °C they refuse. A drinker that discourages drinking during the hours the bird most needs water is worse than no upgrade at all.

  4. The mistake: Pulling feed away all afternoon to keep the birds cool.

    Do this instead: Shift the ration toward early morning and late afternoon, and check that the day total has not fallen.

    Aviagen recommends cool-hour feeding and warns in the same paragraph that birds must not go without feed for too long. The comfort is real and so is the growth cost.

  5. The mistake: Dosing electrolytes by the spoonful from a number found online.

    Do this instead: Use the product label, and ask the LGU veterinarian if the label is unclear.

    Every published figure located for this article is a feed formulation in mEq/kg of ration. None of them is a rate per litre of drinking water, and converting one to the other by eye adds a salt load to a heat load.

Questions people actually ask

At what temperature do chickens get heat stressed?

The Merck Veterinary Manual puts the ideal range for poultry at 18.3 to 23.8 °C with relative humidity up to 40%, and states that chickens start to feel heat stress above 23.8 °C. That threshold is the one worth knowing here, because it is below every monthly figure PAGASA publishes for the three stations checked on this page. The mean daily maximum runs 30.3 to 34.6 °C, the monthly mean runs 26.0 to 29.8 °C, and even the mean daily minimum, which is roughly the hour before sunrise averaged over the month, sits above 23.8 °C in 24 of 36 station-months. The threshold is not a forecast trigger in the Philippines. It is the floor.

Do misters and foggers work for chickens in the Philippines? Show the answer

Often not, and the limit comes from the manufacturer rather than from cost. Aviagen states that evaporative cooling should not be used when relative humidity is above 75%, because it raises humidity further and humid air is what stops a bird shedding heat through its respiratory tract. Of the 36 station-months on this page, 32 have a monthly mean relative humidity above 75%. The four exceptions are February through May at Science Garden in Quezon City, which is the dry-season window in one part of Luzon. Humidity falls in the afternoon and PAGASA publishes only monthly means, so a hygrometer on your own kulungan wall settles it better than this count does.

How much more water do chickens drink in hot weather? Show the answer

Aviagen puts the requirement up about 6.5% for every 1 °C above 21 °C, and says that in tropical areas high environmental temperature can double water consumption. Run that against the PAGASA normal for an April afternoon at Science Garden, a mean daily maximum of 34.6 °C, and the uplift is about 88.4% over the 21 °C baseline. Against the annual mean of 27.8 °C it is about 44.2%. The practical version is that the drinker capacity that was adequate in December is roughly half of what the same manok need on an April afternoon, and the fix is more drinkers rather than more trips.

Can I give my chickens electrolytes for heat stress? Show the answer

Ask the seller or an LGU veterinarian for the rate, and do not take one off a web page including this one. Every published figure found for this article is a feed formulation number rather than a drinking-water dose. Aviagen gives a dietary electrolyte balance of 220 to 240 mEq/kg of feed, sodium bicarbonate supplying about half of dietary sodium, and vitamin increases of 1.25% per 1 °C between 21 and 28 °C rising to 2.5% per 1 °C above 28 °C. Merck describes the same balance as sodium plus potassium minus chloride, 240 to 260 mEq/kg, for normal function. None of those converts to a scoop in a gallon of water without a product label, and inventing the conversion is how a bird gets a salt load on top of a heat load.
